Who was John Purvis
John Purvis was a member of the European Parliament until 2009.
He was most recently co-president of a pro-EU campaigning group with former SNP minister Mike Russell.
For many years, he was also the director of the radio station Kingdom FM.
Mr. Purvis was described as a “lovely man” by the European Movement in Scotland, who was saddened by his death.
“We mourn the loss of our co-president, former Conservative MEP John Purvis, after his courageous battle against cancer: a lovely man, assiduous campaigner, and truly great European,” they wrote.
Douglas Ross, the leader of the Scottish Conservatives, paid tribute to him.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of John’s death,” he said. During his tenure as an MEP, he served our party and Scotland with great dignity.
A man of high principles
“He was a man of strong principles who will be sorely missed.” At this time, my thoughts are with his family and friends.”
In a tribute to Mr. Purvis, ex-Fife SNP MP Stephen Gethins said he would be “badly missed.”
“This is extremely sad news and a loss for Fife and beyond,” he said. John was a thoughtful and kind man.
“Despite belonging to different political parties, I greatly benefited from his advice and support both before and after the EU referendum.” He’ll be sorely missed.”
“John was such a great public servant all through his life and right up until the days before his passing,” said Willie Rennie, former Scottish Lib Dem leader.
“From his time as a member of the European Parliament to his anti-Brexit campaign, he was unwavering and principled.”
“He was unfailingly polite and amusing.” My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, Louise, and their family.”
“I’m sorry to hear this,” SNP MP Peter Grant said. John was the type of politician who would collaborate with you on something you both believed in, even if you disagreed on other issues.”

A career in Brussels
Mr. Purvis first served as a Conservative MEP between 1979, when he was first elected, and 1984.
Later, in 1999, the veteran politician returned to Brussels and served as an MEP until 2009.
He was vice-chair of an EU finance committee and a member of the parliament’s energy and trade groups.
Mr. Purvis was a vocal opponent of Brexit during the 2016 referendum, and he began his new role as the leader of the European Movement in Scotland in November.
