How did David Cannan die?
David Cannan, a “political grandee” from the Isle of Man, was honoured after passing away at the age of 85.
Prior to his retirement in 2011, Mr. Cannan served as Michael’s House of Keys representative for nearly three decades.
He was the first treasury minister to serve after ministerial government was established, and is the father of the current chief minister, Alfred Cannan.
Laurence Skelly, the president of Tynwald, said he had performed “distinguished service.”
He went on to say that he would be “remembered as an intelligent and formidable debater” who accomplished a lot for the group he represented.

Who is David Cannan?
Michael’s representative in the House of Keys and the head of the Isle of Man Water Authority was David Cannan MHK. He was the son of Rev. Canon Charles Cannan, a former House of Keys chaplain.
Cannan, a well-known ally of the British Crown, opposed the proposal to change the title of the Lieutenant Governor to Crown Commissioner.
David’s Education and Career
Before entering politics, he was a businessman in the tea and rubber industries after receiving his education at King William’s College. Before joining Michael MHK in 1982, he served as a councillor for the Conservative Party in the 1970s. He was chosen to serve as Speaker of the House of Keys in 2000 and held the position until the General Election in 2001.
