“We are saddened by the passing of former Husker great Smith this past weekend. Smith was named Big Eight Player of the Year in 1981 and was inducted into the Nebraska Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994.”
Who was Andre Smith?
Smith, a three-year starter for Joe Cipriano and Moe Iba, led the Huskers to three second-place wins in the Big Eight, and he was twice named to the All-Big Eight first team.
He was awarded the 1981 Big Eight Player of the Year as a senior and had a season-scoring average of 18.3 points and 6.6 rebounds. The forward also had the highest field goal percentage (.589) in the Big Eight.
Smith was one of only two Huskers to win league player of the year honors and was also named to the 1981 AP All-America honorable mention list.
He was an honorable AP All-America selection as a sophomore and was selected to the All-Big Eight first team.
Smith ranks in the top 10 in school charts for career rebounds (753, sixth), field goal percentage (.586, fourth), field goals made (673, fourth), and attempted field goals with a total of 1,717 points, which places him fourth on the Huskers’ all-time scoring list (1,148, 10th).
In 1994, he was inducted into the Nebraska Basketball Hall of Honor.
