On his GoFundMe page, which was set up to assist with his medical costs, the devastating news was shared.
It read,
“Our beautiful Matt passed last nights surrounded by his loved ones. He was my everything. My protector. My husband. My best friend.
We were all very blessed to have him in our lives, and as he makes his journey to heaven, we can feel good that he is at peace.
Thank you to everyone for your many messages and prayers. They truly were felt!”

Matt received a diagnosis of appendiceal cancer in November 2021. He battled valiantly through several rounds of chemotherapy and hospital stays. Who was Matt Peterson?
On February 15, 1975, Matt was born to Gail and Larry Peterson in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. He was raised in Maple Grove and received his high school diploma from Osseo.
As a coach, advisor, board member, and supporter of both the boys’ and girls’ programs, Matt was a longstanding friend of the Trojan hockey team. He also played a significant role in New Prague youth hockey.
Hockey will be affected by his loss. At Osseo High School, he was a standout athlete, and he went on to have a prosperous career at the University of Wisconsin. The NHL drafted him in the seventh round. But his modesty and laid-back demeanor forbade him from wearing those honors on his sleeve since he chose to offer his wisdom by helping our programs create the next generation of hockey players.
Brenda, his high school sweetheart, and Matt have three kids together: Alex, Landon, and Taylor. He spent 17 years selling mixers at McNeilus.
He enjoyed coming to the cottage in Crosby, fishing with his friends on Lake Vermillion, and spending time with his family. He was the most unselfish man throughout, a lover and a giver. His father Larry passed away before him.
He leaves behind his wife Brenda, his mother Gail, his sister Heather (Matt), his three children Alex (Sarah), Landon, and Taylor, as well as a large number of nieces, nephews, friends, and other family members.
