Englewood shooting:
In a shooting that happened Monday night in the Englewood neighborhood, a 16-year-old girl was killed and a 15-year-old girl was injured.
According to Chicago police, someone fired fire at a gathering of young people on Monday night in the Englewood neighbourhood, striking two adolescent females, one of whom died.
At around 10:10 p.m., a shooting was reported to have occurred in the 400 block of West 72nd Street.
The video reveals that the victims were among the 200 or so teenagers who had gathered in the area on the street near Hamilton Park. Then, out of nowhere, unknown gunmen opened fire.
According to the police report, the 15-year-old admitted to officers that a group of friends, including the 16-year-old, had travelled into the city from the south suburbs to attend a party.
Around 10 p.m., as they made their way from the Red Line to the 300 block of West 72nd Street, they were confronted and asked what they were looking at. The friends were suddenly followed by two gunshots, probably coming from a black automobile.
The 16-year-old was shot in the back and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead, according to authorities. The medical examiner’s office for Cook County has not yet identified her.
Nevertheless, through our investigation, we were able to identify the victim as Jayla Vrana, a resident of Lincoln, Nebraska.
The 15-year-old was hit by gunfire in the arm and brought to Comer Children’s Hospital, where her status was classified as good.
Police Statement:
Crisis responder Andrew Holmes is currently helping to comfort the impacted families.
Cisis responder Andrew Holmes said,
“You leave out, I love you, and all of a sudden, you never return home,”
“So this father, this mother and this whole this family, and the community have to go through this heartache about losing this baby girl that was still in school.”
“You look at the amount and the statistics of females being shot, it’s a steady increase,”
“So the shooters when they drive around or walk around or run around like cowards, they don’t care where the projectile land.”
Detectives from Area One are on the lookout, but no one is in custody.
