Who was Robert Ramirez?
Ramirez, a Virginia native, joined the Navy in 1996 and was commissioned in 2004. He deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan, according to his releasable service record, which Military Times reported, and was awarded five Bronze Star medals, including two with a battle “V” insignia.
Additionally, Ramirez was awarded three Combat Action Ribbons. He was an outstanding leader, a devoted husband and father, and a good friend to everyone.

How did he die?
In a statement on Wednesday, Naval Special Warfare Command officials said that foul play was not suspected in Ramirez’s death and that an investigation is being conducted by the San Diego police department.
At the time of his death, Ramirez was serving as commanding officer of SEAL Team 1. Also a part of Naval Special Warfare Group One based on Naval Base Coronado.
According to the navy, the family is requesting privacy as they mourn the loss of Ramirez.

Is another commanding officer dead?
Ramirez’s passing comes just a little over a year after the death of another SEAL Team commanding officer, Cmdr. Brian Bourgeois, on Dec. 7, 2021. Bourgeois was the commander of SEAL Team 8, based at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek in Virginia. He died following an accident during a fast-rope training evolution in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Robert Ramirez was promoted to the rank of Commander on September 1, 2019, and was assigned to the West Coast Special Warfare Unit overseeing SEAL Team 1 in June 2022.

Captain David Abernathy, commander of Naval Special Warfare Group 1, which manages all San Diego-based Navy SEAL teams, offered his condolences to Ramirez’s family.
“Bobby was an outstanding leader, devoted husband, and father, and a good friend to us all,” Abernathy said in a statement. “This is a devastating loss to our community and all who knew him. We will remain in support of Bobby’s family, friends, and teammates during this extremely difficult time.
