How did Barry Humphries die?
The actor Barry Humphries, best known for playing Dame Edna Everage, has died at the age of 89.
According to allegations that surfaced earlier this week, the comedian was hospitalized in Sydney due to “serious health problems” as a result of complications from a recent hip replacement procedure.
David Faktor, a spokesman for Sydney’s St. Vincent’s Hospital confirmed that the performer passed away on Saturday, April 22, at about 7 p.m.
He told the PA news agency:
“I can confirm Barry Humphries passed away this evening Sydney time, around 7pm on Saturday evening.”
His family released a statement that said, according to Sydney Morning Herald:
” He was completely himself until the very end, never losing his brilliant mind, his unique wit and generosity of spirit.”
“With over 70 years on the stage, he was an entertainer to his core, touring up until the last year of his life and planning more shows that will sadly never be.”
They continued: “His audiences were precious to him, and he never took them for granted. Although he may be best remembered for his work in theatre, he was a painter, author, poet, and a collector and lover of art in all its forms.
“He was also a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a friend and confidant to many. His passing leaves a void in so many lives.
“The characters he created, which brought laughter to millions, will live on.”
Soon after Humphries’ demise was reported, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese posted a picture of Dame Edna Everage on Twitter.
Barry Humphries Cause of death
We’re sorry to have to inform you that Barry Humphries has passed away.
Barry Humphries was regarded as having a friendly personality. Many people must be curious to know the Barry Humphries cause of death in light of the recent news.
Humphries was initially hospitalized in February after hurting his hip after a tumble in his Sydney flat and requiring a “painful” hip replacement.
He believed he would soon be back on his feet in March and had plans to travel the nation. In March, Humphries responded to inquiries about his health by using his distinctive humour. He said to the Herald and The Age:
“It was the most ridiculous thing, like all domestic incidents are. I was reaching for a book, my foot got caught on a rug or something, and down I went.”
“I have to get back on my feet … I’m going back on tour later this year. The result of my broken hip means I now have a titanium hip … you can call me Bionic Bazza.”
Only a few days after being released from the hospital, Mr. Humphries was readmitted on April 19 to a Sydney hospital.
Despite conflicting tales of his condition, reports from Australia indicate that he is back in a hospital in Sydney. Humphries answered a call from the newspaper before friends and relatives picked up the phone, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. Lizzie Spender, his wife, is cited as adding, “He’s fine.” In a letter to the newspaper, his family made the following claims:
“Barry Humphries is currently in hospital receiving treatment for health issues. Barry would like to thank everybody for the support and good wishes he has received but would like more and more. He would also like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff at St Vincent’s Hospital.”
However, Peter Ford, entertainment editor for Sunrise, said on-air that Mr. Humphries’ health had been worse during the previous week.
He said,
“These are complications from hip replacement surgery and has been going on for several months now,
“Things are tough and all we can do it at this time is give a big shoutout to to Barry Humphries and say Australia loves you.”
Humphries never made it home, and his health started to worsen a week ago despite laborious physiotherapy treatments.
Even though his daughters Emily and Tessa, who live in Australia, and sons Rupert and Oscar, who live in London, were all called to his bedside and that the octogenarian was said to be “cracking jokes” as friends and family, including long-time collaborator Andrew Ross, visited him, his prognosis never got any better. His wife of 30 years, Lizzie Spender, his children, and his 10 grandkids were at his side as he passed away.
Who was Barry Humphries?
John Barry Humphries was an Australian comedian, actor, author and satirist. He was most known for creating and portraying Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson, his on-stage and television alter personas. In addition, he was a producer and screenwriter for movies, a musical theatre performer in London’s West End, a writer, and a painter of landscapes. In 2010, author Anne Pender called Humphries “the most significant theatrical figure of our time… [and] the most significant comedian to emerge since Charlie Chaplin” for his delivery of dadaist and absurdist comedy to millions of people.
Humphries’ roles made him famous over the world, and he also made appearances in a lot of theatrical performances, movies, and television programmes. Dame Edna Everage was first envisioned as a dowdy Moonee Ponds housewife who parodied Australian suburbia comfort and insularity.
However, over four decades, she developed into a parody of stardom—a garishly attired, sarcastic, egotistical “Housewife Gigastar” who has received praise from all over the world. Humphries also created the satirical characters of Sir Les Patterson, a “priapic and inebriated cultural attaché,” who “continued to bring worldwide discredit upon Australian arts and culture, while contributing as much to the Australian vernacular as he has borrowed from it,” Sandy Stone; iconoclastic 1960s underground film-maker Martin Agrippa; Paddington socialist academic Neil Singleton; sleazy trade union official Lance Boyle; high-pressure art salesman Morrie O’Connor; failed tycoon Owen Steele; and archetypal Australian bloke Barry McKenzie.
When he was living in Australia in the 1950s, Dame Edna originally surfaced as a satire of suburban housewives based on his mother. Initially, Edna was very reserved, Humphries recalled to the Guardian in 2018. “Hard to imagine!” She developed an eccentric persona over time and became famous for her extravagant spectacles, lilac-rinsed hair, and catchphrase, “Hello possums!.”
At the Royal Variety Performance in 2019, Dame Edna startled the then-Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, by sitting next to them and joking, “They’ve found me a better seat,” before getting up and leaving. In 2012, the satirical one-man stage show’s last tour was announced by the actor, writer, director, and playwright who was also an avid landscape painter. But he made a comeback the previous year with a run of programs that examined his career.
He also voiced the character of Bruce the Shark in the 2003 Pixar animated picture Finding Nemo and made cameos in the 1967 comedies Bedazzled, Spice World, The Hobbit, and Fabulous: The Movie. He had four marriages and is survived by his wife Lizzie Spender and four kids.
