A South Sydney legend died: The NRL world, in particular the South Sydney Rabbitohs, is mourning after the unexpected loss of 2014 Grand Final winner Kyle Turner.

Kyle Turner has very sadly passed away at the age of 31. His sincerity and the delight he offered to many people are attested to by those who knew him.

Kyle Turner, a premiership winner for the Rabbitohs, has passed away. Kyle Turner cause of death was unknown at this time.

Throughout his career, the versatile former South Sydney forward played 91 NRL games for the red and green, and in his rookie season in 2014, he assisted the team in ending a grand final winless streak. 

During his six-year career, Turner was a beloved figure at Redfern and also represented NSW Country and Indigenous All Stars.  Turner’s career was ended by a neck injury, which took him back to Coonabarabran, where he joined his hometown club. 

South Sydney Rabbitohs and Coonabarabran Unicorns have not yet confirmed the rumors.  The latter did update their Facebook photo to reflect the wearing of black armbands this weekend by the group.

Mr. Turner will be remembered very fondly by everyone connected with the Club. “Kyle was an amazing human being,” Mr Solly said.“He epitomized the country boy Rugby League player. He was such a tough, uncompromising player on the field, yet a lovely, generous man off the field. “Over his nine years with our Club, he contributed a lot of time to Souths Cares and was very popular amongst his teammates, colleagues, our Members, and supporters alike. “We offer our full support to his family and friends at this very difficult time, and he will always be remembered at our Club as a man that delivered a premiership to the Rabbitohs, but also a man that connected deeply with his communities. “We will hold him close to our hearts for the rest of this season and in the years to come. Vale Kyle Turner.”

The 31-year-old died at his Coonabarabran home following an apparent overdose suicide.

After a protracted struggle with depression and mental anguish, the NSW Country and Indigenous All Stars rugby league star was reportedly declared dead from an apparent suicide.

However, Kyle Turner cause of death has not yet been confirmed by his family members or any official media sites.  Also, it is essential to await an official announcement before drawing any conclusions.

Who was Kyle Turner?

Kyle Turner, an Australian rugby league player who last played for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the NRL as a second-row, lock, and center, passed away on August 18, 2023.

Turner participated in the 2014 NRL Grand Final-winning Rabbitohs team as well as the Indigenous All Stars and Country NSW teams.

Turner, who was of Indigenous Australian ancestry and was born in Sydney, New South Wales, played junior rugby league for the Coonabarabran Unicorns before being signed by the South Sydney Rabbitohs. He was a member of the New South Wales Indigenous Under-16s squad when he was younger.

Turner participated in the New York City League for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2011 and 2012 before switching to the North Sydney Bears, a New South Wales Cup squad for the Rabbitohs, in 2013. Turner re-signed with the Rabbitohs on March 1 on a two-year deal through the 2015 campaign.

2014 

Turner made his NRL debut for South Sydney in round three of the 2014 NRL season against the Wests Tigers, playing off the substitute bench in South Sydney’s 16-25 loss at ANZ Stadium. He scored his first NRL try in South Sydney’s 18-2 victory over the Penrith Panthers in round 6 at Penrith Stadium. He participated in 25 games and scored six tries towards the end of the 2014 campaign.

2015 

Turner participated in Souths’ victorious 2015 NRL Auckland Nines campaign on January 31 and February 1. He participated in the 2015 All-Stars game on February 13. He suffered a severe neck injury during the game when Paul Gallen attacked him.

Turner missed the first 20 rounds of the 2015 NRL season due to injury before making a comeback in round 21’s matchup with the Penrith Panthers and starting off the bench. Turner was hit during the game, had a concussion, and was taken off the field for the rest of Souths’ 20-16 victory at ANZ Stadium. He participated in 6 games for Souths by the end of the 2015 season.

2016 

Turner participated in the 2016 NRL Auckland Nines for Souths in February. He played in 23 games over the course of the season, scoring 3 tries.

2017 

He played for Souths in 21 NRL games in 2017, appearing in one try. Turner was chosen for the most recent City vs. Country Origin, playing for the Country League in their 20-10 loss over the City New South Wales Rugby League squad at Glen Willow Regional Sports Stadium while beginning in the second row.

2018 

Turner played just once for Souths in the 2018 campaign, coming on as a substitute in the team’s 26-14 victory over Eastern Suburbs. Turner played for the North Sydney Bears’ reserve grade team for the remainder of the season.

2019 

Turner returned to the first-grade squad under new head coach Wayne Bennett, and he made 16 appearances for Souths in the regular season of 2019 when the team placed third on the table. Turner’s season-ending release by Souths due to salary cap restrictions was made public on September 10th.

2020 

Turner quit rugby league after turning down an offer from the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and moved back to Coonabarabran. 2021. He unexpectedly returned in 2021 with the Coonabarabran Unicorns. He also taught physical education at the neighborhood high school, where he had previously studied.

“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. Saying goodbye to someone we love is heartbreaking. I write this obituary with a heavy heart to inform you of the demise of Former NRL Grand Final winner Kyle Turner.

A proud Kamilaroi man and Coonabarabran Unicorns junior, Mr. Turner joined the Rabbitohs in 2011, the year in which he won the Rabbitohs Under 20s Player of the Year Award.

He will be remembered as a gentle giant with an infectious smile and a crowd favorite amongst the Rabbitohs faithful, as is evidenced by his award as The Burrow Player of the Year in 2016. No words can shift the pain, no actions can remove the grief, and only our love that is left behind can provide our hearts with some relief.
