Who was Anne Lamkin Durward?

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Anne Lamkin Durward studied at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. She then went back to Birmingham to finish her legal education at Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law, earning her law degree in 1995. She remains a coach for the Cumberland School of Law’s National Moot Court Team.

Judge Anne Lamkin Durward served in position 1 of the 10th Judicial Circuit of Alabama. She came into power in 2020. She will be out of office on January 15, 2029. For Alabama’s 10th Judicial Circuit Place 1, Durward (Democratic Party) campaigned for re-election. On November 8, 2022, she was elected in the general election.

She has been active in a variety of organizations during her career, serving as a Fellow in both the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and the International Academy of Family Lawyers. She has also held board positions with many organizations and is an active member of the Birmingham Bar Association and the legal profession.

She belonged to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and the International Academy of Family Lawyers, where she had literally hundreds of acquaintances. Anne travelled nonstop to state chapters as a goodwill ambassador while serving as president of the AAML Foundation. She took great pride in being a successful moot court coach at the Cumberland School of Law and a committed participant in the Birmingham Bar Association Women Lawyers Section. In her family, she was the second-most ardent supporter of Alabama college football (Roll Tide!).

Regarding Anne Lamkin Durward’s appointment as a Domestic Relations Circuit Court Judge, family law attorney Randy Nichols has the following to say: “We know Anne will serve with distinction and wish her the absolute best in this new chapter of her distinguished career. No doubt she will perform well in her role as domestic relations circuit court judge. Our firm will miss Anne immensely, but the people of Jefferson County will benefit greatly.”

She served as the AAML Foundation’s president. She was at home with their dogs Duke and Laney, as well as her husband John.

No one was more deserving of the title “The Honorable” than she, who acquired it in a landslide election a few years ago. Anne set the bar for professionalism, zeal, elegance, and charm. She had a gift for making others feel at ease.

Her husband John and I were runners together at a law firm over 30 years ago. She was a great Judge and person, and I knew that when I was in her courtroom that my client was going to get a fair shake. She knew the law too. I’ve chatted with several of my attorney friends today and we’ve all agreed that her sudden passing has hit us differently, and makes us realize how temporary this life really is. Prayers to her husband and the rest of the family. The legal community has lost a tremendous asset. ”

Pastor Kris Eskrine wrote: “We will miss you my friend Judge Anne Lamkin Durward. Prayers lifted for my brother John Durward!”
