Reid Davidson, 24, has been identified as the individual who passed away in the hospital after a minivan being driven the wrong way by an allegedly intoxicated driver crashed his compact vehicle on the Nanaimo Parkway on the evening of Wednesday, July 19.

Reid was a valued member of the local soccer community with Nanaimo United and Vancouver Island University. His positivity and kindest were a shining light for soccer on the Island.

Reid who is from 100 Mile House was a committed player who traveled across all of B.C. to play the game he was so passionate about. Here’s what we know about his accident and Reid Davidson cause of death.


Vancouver Island crash

According to Nanaimo RCMP, the driver of a Toyota Yaris that was struck by a suspected intoxicated driver driving the wrong way on the Nanaimo Parkway has passed away from their injuries.

Around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, police were called about a report of an erratic motorist on the Nanaimo Parkway close to the Cedar flyover. When it struck the Toyota, officers were attempting to find the minivan.

After the collision, the minivan driver allegedly fled on foot, according to witnesses. Police canines spotted the man nearby after tracking him.

Before being taken to the hospital by paramedics for treatment, officers treated his injuries. The van driver is the subject of a police investigation into drunk driving.

As per the preliminary findings, detectives suspect that among other things, alcohol played a role in the crash, according to Const. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

For several hours following the crash, the northbound lanes of the Nanaimo Parkway were stopped while detectives gathered forensic evidence. Both automobiles had significant damage and had to be taken away.

Reid Davidson, a former Vancouver Island University student, was the casualty, according to the Nanaimo United FC football team.

According to a statement from the team, Davidson was both a staff member and the captain of the men’s Division 2 squad, which he helped win the championship in February.

Reid has been a significant part of our club for several years where he brought genuine warmth and caring as a valued member of staff as well as being a strong competitor on the pitch, the statement read.

“Our hearts are broken, but in times like these, the soccer community has a way of coming together, so, with that in mind, we will dedicate our Harbourside men’s and women’s games this Sunday to the memory of Reid.” Friday finds the minivan driver still in the hospital.

Charges for driving while intoxicated and other offenses are still pending. For several hours after the collision, the Nanaimo Parkway’s northbound lanes were shut down. Due to their severe damage, both automobiles had to be hauled away from the accident.


Who was Reid Davidson?

Reid, a 100 Mile House native, was a dedicated athlete who toured throughout British Columbia to play the sport he loved so much.

He traveled from Williams Lake, Kamloops, and Vancouver to EFS camps. Reid traveled on two EFS tours, visiting the US and Europe. Reid attended Vancouver Island University after finishing high school and played for the men’s football team there.

Reid’s love for football was evident on and off the pitch throughout his young football career. He committed himself to KYSA and made a lasting impression on our football community.

Reid’s dedication and talent emerged from his earliest days until his U18 season, motivating coaches and players alike. Despite the travel time from his home in 100 Mile House to Kamloops, Reid took on the task head-on and showed up to practices and games with steadfast commitment.

Reid’s talent was discovered after a successful trip with KYSA, and he was offered a position at Vancouver Island University (VIU) to pursue his dream of playing collegiate football.

Reid, though, was a shining example of kindness and sincerity in addition to being a superb athlete. Everyone he met was won over by his sincerity, and he made friends effortlessly.

Those fortunate enough to have known him will never forget him. Reid was an exceptional teammate who always put the team first and helped teammates both on and off the pitch.

His comradery and sportsmanship set a high bar for the KYSA community, motivating players to strive for excellence and be kind to one another.

Reid continued to play football even after he stopped playing, taking on the position of Member Service Administrator for Nanaimo United FC.

He persisted in giving his time and energy to the game he cherished, displaying his unshakable devotion to the football community.

The Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency number is 250-754-2345, and police are requesting that any drivers who may have been in the vicinity of the collision and may have dash-cam video of the collision or Dodge Caravan traveling the wrong way on the highway before the incident call.
