Who was Coco Lee?

Coco Lee was a Chinese-American singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actress.

Lee’s career started in Hong Kong before moving to Taiwan. Her song “Do You Want My Love” reached the US music charts as well. Just No Other Way, her debut studio album in English, was released in 1999.

She performed the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon song “A Love Before Time,” which was nominated for a Best Original Song Oscar, live on stage.

Her mother brought Lee and her sisters to live in San Francisco when Lee was nine years old. She attended both Raoul Wallenberg Traditional High School and Presidio Middle School in San Francisco.

She tried to balance her budding career there with her academics at the University of California, Irvine but eventually left after her first year to focus on her pop career. She was offered a recording contract in Hong Kong the summer after finishing high school.

Career

In 1992, Lee completed her high school education and went back to Hong Kong to watch her sisters compete in the Miss Hong Kong Pageant. She participated in the 12th Annual New Talent Singing Awards while there and performed Whitney Houston’s Run to You, placing first runner-up.

She released her first two solo albums in Mandarin in 1994 through Fancy Pie Records, Love from Now On and Promise Me. She released her third Mandarin album, Woman in Love, as well as a cover album in the English language, Brave Enough to Love, in 1995.

Following the signing of her contract with Sony Music Entertainment in 1996, Lee released the album “Coco Lee,” which quickly rose to the top of the charts in Asia.

With the smash song “Do You Want My Love” on it, Lee released her debut album Just No Other Way in 1999 under the 550 Music label. Her romantic song “Before I Fall in Love” was used on the soundtrack for the film Runaway Bride. She and Kelly Price sang a duet together titled “Can’t Get Over.”

Wang Leehom, Stefanie Sun, Elva Hsiao, and Jolin Tsai were among the musicians who helped Lee record the charity singles “Hand in Hand” and “We Meet the future” for SARS. She published the Mandarin album You & Me once she was back in Asia. By the year 2000, she had 20 albums out and had sold 7.5 million copies of them in Asia.

For the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Lee sang the song “A Love Before Time” in 2001. In October 2001, her album Promise Coco was published. Lee’s remix album D. Is Coco (Dance Is Coco) was published in 2002. With singer Jacky Cheung, she sang the anti-tobacco song “From the Beginning ’til the End” .

She sang the anti-racism song “A Dream of One” alongside Korean performer Jin Young Park. She collaborated with Shaggy to perform and host the “MTV Asia Awards” in Singapore in 2003.

In the Chinese comedy Master of Everything (), which received the Best Foreign Film prize at the 2005 Beverly Hills Film Festival, Lee co-starred with John Lone.

She attended the international AIDS conference in Bangkok, Thailand in 2004 as the Youth AIDS ambassador, representing Asian artists, to meet with various youth groups and discuss what she could do to inform them about AIDS.

She released her second English album, Exposed, in 2005 via Sony BMG. The album’s sensual lyrics in a few tracks, including Touch and So Good, caused it to be outlawed in mainland China. On September 22, 2006, Lee’s subsequent Mandarin album, Just Want You , was made available. Her song Dreams on Oriental Seas , which featured Sun Nan, was premiered on April 7, 2011. The 14th FINA world championships, which began on July 16 in Shanghai, were given this as their theme.

Lee made the announcement that she opened her own studio on June 8, 2011. Her song Four Seas Alliance , which served as the soundtrack for the 2011 Chinese television drama All Men Are Brothers , was aired on June 25. On May 31, 2013, Universal Music released Illuminate, her most recent album.

Although she acknowledged that losing her voice to bronchitis in 2014 had impaired her singing talent, she participated in the fourth season of the Chinese reality show I Am A Singer in 2016. She bounced back, participated, and ultimately won the contest, being the first non-mainland Chinese singer to do so.

Later, Lee made two further appearances as a guest vocalist for two additional seasons (now renamed as vocalist); on the fifth season at the biannual concert, and on the sixth season as a guest performer for Jessie J, who ultimately won that season.

With great sadness, we would like to share some bad news: CoCo unfortunately suffered from depression a few years ago. Afterwards she remained in a coma. After intensive rescue and treatment by the medical team, she finally regained consciousness on July 5th and passed away.

In the past 29 years, in addition to bringing us endless joy and surprised with her singing and dancing, she has worked harder to open up a new world for Chinese singers in the international music scene and has been going all out to shine for us. We are so proud of her.

As CoCo’s family, we are so grateful and honoured to have such an excellent and outstanding sister. We are grateful to have such a kind angel. We hope that now she has gone to a happier place and no longer suffers from depression. I believe that she will be in a good place! Right now, our biggest responsibility is to take care of our elderly mother. I hope everyone can pray for Mama Lee and give us some time and privacy to heal.

Lastly, thank you to the medical team for their dedicated work to rescue and care. I hope that you will not only miss CoCo, but also share her bright smile, sincerity, and convey kindness and love everyone around you. Let’s continue CoCo’s wish to let everyone around her feel love and happiness.

Although CoCo didn’t stay in our world for a long time but her light will last forever.
