Who was Egbert Gaye?

Thousands of Montrealers were familiar with Egbert Gaye because of his work on community Contact, a publication that focused on the city’s Black population, and his contributions to CJAD and the Montreal Gazette daily. Egbert has a degree in journalism and political science with an emphasis in international relations from Concordia University. He founded and served as managing editor of Montreal Community Contact.

The newspaper is renowned for delivering uplifting news articles concerning the Black communities in the city. The Montreal publication Community Contact never publishes a segment without Egbert Gaye’s approval. The managing editor contributes to the newspaper’s writing, editing, and design efforts.

The community publication was started by Gaye 31 years ago. It served and continues to serve as the sole newspaper for Montreal’s English-speaking Black and Caribbean community. The publication, according to the active editor, depicts both the hardship and the positive aspects of the town. These tales aren’t being told solely by Gaye. Four part-time employees and several columnists for Community Contact are all members of the community they serve. Gaye’s son Emar Mitchell also works as a graphic designer. After graduating from graphic design school, he started working for the paper.

Around Greater Montreal, there are 70 venues where you can find Community Contact, including convenience stores, churches, and community centers. The managing editor believes that the subsequent generation of young Black journalists will continue to inspire him, support the publication, and produce tales that will be valuable for future generations.

He also provided several Black authors with an opportunity to start their careers in journalism and a platform for columnists to produce opinion pieces that explored the Black experience in Quebec. Gaye frequently contributed columns to the local radio station CJAD.

The Montreal Community Contact received a nomination for the CBC’s Black Changemakers series last year. Yvonne Sam, a board member and newspaper columnist, was questioned at the time about what the paper had accomplished for the Black community. “What has it not done?” she said.

“Without it, we would be adrift,” she claimed. Gaye was praised for having a humorous sense of humor and a receptive leadership style.

How did Egbert Gaye die?

Egbert Gaye, a black community journalist, passed away at age 67. Gaye passed on Sunday night, as reported by his wife.

The editor of Community Contact was highly known for commenting on CJAD and serving as an example for a new generation of Black journalists. Jimmy Zoubris, a fellow CJAD analyst, pointed out that Egbert Gaye’s “moral compass was always on and he never held back on an opinion.”

The Montreal Community Contact writer Gemma Raeburn-Baynes, who oversees the annual Spice Island Cultural Festival and has worked for the publication for at least 25 years, expressed her astonishment and devastation at learning of Gaye’s passing.

Raeburn-Baynes told CBC News,

“Egbert is the last person I expected to die. He was just so full of life,”

“There is a big hole left in the community.”

She called him her “confidante” and someone who “kept the community together.” She remarked, “He was like the glue,” adding that whenever anyone needed to know anything about what had happened in the Black community, “we called Egbert.”

Prior to beginning a 17-year career as a television reporter and anchor, Elysia Bryan-Baynes, Raeburn-Baynes’ niece, also worked for the newspaper. She recalls how involved Gaye was in all aspects of the publication.

Bryan-Baynes said,

“He never doubted our potential and just always told us over and over again that there was a space for us,

“He really instilled in us the idea that our stories matter. Good stories matter. Positive stories matter and that there was so much more happening that we might not see in other places and it was our responsibility to make sure those stories were told.”

She added that he served as a mentor, offering young journalists under his wing a great deal of advice and encouraging feedback.
