Mary-Lu, a popular singer, actor, producer, and professor of popular music theory and performance has passed away.

Her friends and coworkers have shared their heartfelt condolences on social media after hearing this sad news.

Mary Lu Zahalan was well-known for Poker Night (2013), Karma (2005) and The Third Miracle (1999).

Who was Mary Lu Zahalan?

Mary Lu Zahalan was a recording artist who released three CDs and has been nominated for a Juno. She had a publishing contract with Sony Music, and she collaborated with illustrious producers like David Foster and Humberto Gatica.

She has a long list of roles in movies and TV shows, including The Third Miracle starring Ed Harris, Exhibits A, Twice In A Lifetime, PSI Factor, Top Cops, Ready Or Not, Missing Treasures, as well as several made-for-TV movies.

Mary Lu has performed innumerable voice-overs and jingles in addition to appearing in hundreds of television ads. She was the lead actress in the Dora Award-winning film PumpBoys and Dinettes before leading a Canadian Armed Forces tour to the Middle East.

Before beginning a career as an entertainer, Zahalan, who was born in Renfrew, Ontario, and reared in Oakville, Ontario, was a 1976 Miss Canada finalist.

At Oakville’s Sheridan College, she taught arts. In 1983, she was named the Most Promising Female Vocalist for a Juno Award.

She released the album Zahalan on MCA Records in 1990, and the track “I Can’t Forget About You” had a mediocre amount of success on Canadian Pop Radio. Zahalan earned a master’s degree in 2011 from Liverpool Hope University in a programme that focused on The Beatles. She was the first programme graduate.

Mary-Lu passed away after battling stage 4 lung cancer. She leaves behind her two amazing daughters, Kayla and Rachael.

She was described as a kind and beautiful soul. Her friends described her as a sincere, generous and great mentor, who treated all her students with respect and dignity.

Mary was known for her love, grace, kindness, compassion, an unparalleled zest for life, and a deep love of music.

I came into theatre school untrained, not knowing anything about theatre and uncomfortable with my voice. Mary-Lu Zahalan immediately gave me a place to feel like I belonged as a raw pop singer. She challenged me every week, she encouraged me to go further and was an enthusiastic mentor. She’s one of those magical educators. I always considered her a friend. She’s always in your inbox wondering what you’re up to (even a decade later) and always there in an instance to support your artistic endeavours.

I’m struggling to process the passing of my friend and mentor Mary-Lu Zahalan . During my time at Sheridan she inspired me to write numerous songs for her class. I ended up writing a new song almost every week. And after I graduated she was always the first person I would ask for feedback on each song before I would release them. Having someone in your corner like that is so rare. She was always supportive, constructive and sincere. She always knew how to push me over any bumps in the road of my creative process. I’m really sad we never got around to the originals and beatles covers you had such great ideas for. And now for the first time since you knew me I am truly at a loss for words. I miss you Mary-Lu.
