What happened to Australian DJ Ian Bell?
Australian DJ and music writer Ian Bell has died days before he was due to travel to the UK for the Eurovision Song Contest. The 60-year-old had reportedly been on holiday with his family in Paris when he suffered a heart attack.
It is understood the DJ died on May 2, during his family’s first stop in Paris on a trip that was meant to conclude with the group heading to the Eurovision in Liverpool, which takes place next week, according to Adelaide publication The Advertiser.
The demise of Ian Bell was Confirmed by his friend through his Social Media Page
“My special favorite man Ian Bell has passed away unexpectedly. I’m absolutely devastated. From the very moment I first met him, DJing in an Adelaide club, we had a special bond that the immense distance between our cities couldn’t break.
We wrote and performed a full comedy festival show together. We did everything to be in each other’s lives. We always stayed at each other’s houses when traveling for festivals or bands. We laughed a million times, he told me all of his wonderful stories a million times and we DJd together a million times. And yet it’s not enough.
Every celebrity you’ve ever thought of met Ian and he had a story about them all. If they were unkind when Ian would try to get them to sign his 7″ pressing of their first obscure single I knew they were no good. Ian was, simply put, one of the very best humans and I will miss him very deeply forever.
Cause of death
Ian Bell died of a heart attack in Paris while on holiday with his family and en route to the UK for the Song Contest. The news of his demise just broke, the exact cause of death will be unknown.
As per the source from He is survived by his wife Jordan as well as their daughter Ruby and his sisters Susan and Janet. Friends and Families are still in shock and still couldn’t process the News. One of his friends mentioned that,
I am still processing this so very sad news. There is a DJ Ian-shaped hole in my heart. A dear friend for so many years! I will miss you. Love and support to Jordie and Ruby from the LeRox family. Vale Ian Bell.
Ian Bell-uniquely good to people and artists
Ian was uniquely good to people and artists. He made every artist feel special. There was no fan like Ian. Yes, he’d meet Rod Stewart/whoever at the stage door, but he’d also make the drummer’s day by complimenting him on his first teenage garage band that no one else had heard of. You didn’t have to be even a big star adjacent for Ian’s support, he’d see everyone’s show and make custom merch of tiny artists himself if they hadn’t gotten around to it. He made everyone feel so loved and supported. He was also a record shop owner, concert writer, and photographer, who worked and performed at Adelaide’s Big Day Out festival over the years. He gained a following after spinning records at a whole host of clubs including Limbo in the 1980s, as well as Heaven and his Pop! night on Gouger St in the 1990s. |
DJ IAN – HE PLAYS POP MUSIC
DJ Ian conducted many events and shows. He plays Pop Music. Here is a glimpse of his social media post from october 2020. some of his works are laying some top-line, poptastic tunes at my favorite club in the universe Mr McClelland’s Finishing School this very next Friday night (Nov 18th). Fancy Pants McClelland is in Las Vegas (or similar) probably dancing up a storm and scaring the locals while scissor-kicking his way through the dancefloor at The Sands.

Not sure I really have the words right now to explain how sad I am at the loss of one of the most beautiful people I had the pleasure of knowing. Too many stories whirling around my head of a most excellent human being. For now, I will say we both loved taking photos and this one paints a thousand words.
All my thoughts and love are with Jordie Belle and Ruby at this time. Vale Ian Bell. I love ya brother. So many did. We will carry your spirit forward.

Oh my. This is heartbreaking news to discover. I was only chatting to Ian two weeks ago at the Semaphore Record Fair and then a week ago online. He has always been such a super lovely and kind human to me (since I was 15). I know how excited he was to be heading to Eurovision too. Love to his family at this time

I’m so sorry Craig; I know what he meant to you. Much love to you and those in the Adelaide Arts community that adored him. I always loved his sets at POP and Proscenium; he had the best vinyl collection and the best eye.
