According to his West Rowan High School in North Carolina, Chris Smith, who played in the NFL for eight seasons, passed away on April 17, 2023. He was 31.

Petara Cordero, Smith’s girlfriend and the mother of one of his three children, passed away on September 11, 2019, after getting out of Smith’s car, which had hit a median and became immobilized. She was then hit by a passing automobile.

Who was Chris Smith?

Chris Smith played defensive end for the National Football League (NFL) in American football. The Jacksonville Jaguars selected him in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draught. Smith also participated in games with the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals. At Arkansas, he played collegiate football. Smith studied at Mount Ulla, North Carolina’s West Rowan High School. He recorded 16.5 sacks and 98 tackles as a senior.

Smith participated in six games as a true freshman in 2010, making three tackles. He participated in 13 games with three starts as a sophomore in 2011. He recorded 31 stops and 3.5 sacks. He started each of the 12 games he played in as a junior in 2012, compiling 52 tackles and 9.5 sacks. He had 37 tackles and 8.5 sacks in 12 games as a senior in 2013. Smith was chosen for the second team of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) as a senior in 2013.

Professional career

The Jacksonville Jaguars picked Smith, 159th overall, in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draught. In a deal that transferred Eugene Monroe to the Baltimore Ravens, the selection that was used to draught Smith was also acquired. On September 13, 2014, the Jaguars released him. He was then added to their practice squad two days later. On October 20, he was added to the active roster.

Smith was traded by the Jacksonville Jaguars to the Cincinnati Bengals on April 11, 2017, in exchange for a 2018 conditional draught selection. Smith was hired to improve a Bengals defense that had 19th-most sacks in the league the previous year. His career-high 26 tackles and three sacks came as he was active in all 16 games.

Smith and the Cleveland Browns agreed to a three-year contract on March 14, 2018. He had two starts out of his 16 games played, finishing with 21 total tackles, one sack, two passes defended, and one forced fumble. On December 3, 2019, the Browns released Smith. He participated in nine games but only made one tackle. Smith agreed to a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers on March 5, 2020. Smith was released by the Panthers on July 30, 2020.

On August 23, 2020, Smith participated in a trial with the Las Vegas Raiders. The Las Vegas Raiders acquired Smith on August 24, 2020. On September 5, 2020, he was cut, and the following day, he was added to the practice squad. For the team’s weeks 5, 8, 9, 11, and 12 games against the Kansas City Chiefs, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers, Chiefs, and Atlanta Falcons, he was added to the active roster on October 10 and October 31 and returned to the practice squad following each game. On December 12, 2020, he was added to the active roster.

Smith agreed to a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens on July 27, 2021. He was reinstated to the practice squad the next day after being discharged on August 31, 2021.

On October 19, 2021, he was freed. Smith joined the Houston Texans’ practice squad on September 3, 2021.

On December 23, 2021, he received a promotion to the active roster. On March 9, 2023, Smith signed a contract with the Seattle Sea Dragons of the XFL.
