Who was Jim Durkin?
Durkin, a founding member of DARK ANGEL, contributed to the group’s first three albums, “We Have Arrived” (1985), “Darkness Descends” (1986), and “Leave Scars” (1989), before leaving in 1989. When DARK ANGEL reunited in 2013, he was a member of the band’s lineup and has been performing with them ever since. Durkin had been skipping a few of DARK ANGEL’s most recent performances. Laura Christine, the wife of drummer Gene Hoglan, took his place at the performances. The classic record “Darkness Descends” will be performed in its entirety at three special concerts next month at the Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles, California by DARK ANGEL, who have been touring occasionally ever since reuniting a decade ago.

Durkin and his bandmates have been developing music for a brand-new studio album for the most of the previous few years. The lineup that has played infrequent live gigs since reforming in 2013—Hoglan, Durkin, Eric Meyer (guitar), Ron Rinehart (vocals), and Michael Gonzalez—was meant to appear on DARK ANGEL’s first album since 1991’s “Time Does Not Heal” (bass). Hoglan announced on a Twitch livestream from his house in February 2022 that he and the other members of DARK ANGEL were “in the process” of creating a new album.
Gene said,
” I have a lot of work ahead of me, and so does Jim Durkin,”
“He’s been sending over songs, riffs, stuff like that, [which has been] super exciting. We’re all of the same mindset of making this just the most absolutely kick-ass DARK ANGEL record that we can.”
Don Doty sang on two albums by DARK ANGEL, “We Have Arrived” and “Darkness Descends,” before leaving the band and being replaced by Rinehart (after a brief stint with Jim Drabos in 1987). The band recorded two more studio LPs — “Leave Scars” and “Time Does Not Heal” — before calling it quits in 1992.

“Super sad to hear of the passing of our thrash metal brother Jim Durkin of Dark Angel Official Back in 1983 he had auditioned and played guitar at a few rehearsals with us in Megadeth after Greg Handevidt departed and just before Kerry King sat in on guitar for the 1984 shows in the San Francisco Bay area. In fact, we may have even borrowed some of Jim’s Marshall amps & cabs to complete our amplifier backline for those debut shows in February, 1984. Condolences to his family, friends and band mates…. his contribution to thrash metal will be missed by all! ”
