Indiana State Police Alliance announced the tragic news of beloved member James R. Bailey’s demise on their official Facebook page and the statement reads the following,
It is with an incredibly heavy heart that we announce the passing of Indiana State Police Master Trooper James R. Bailey. On March 3, 2023, M/Trp. Bailey was tragically struck by a fleeing vehicle while attempting to stop the suspect. The Indiana State Police Alliance was proud to have M/Trp. Bailey is a career member of our association. Tonight, we mourn a life taken far too soon and continue to send our prayers and support to family, friends, colleagues, and the Fort Wayne community.
How did the accident happen?
IN DEKALB COUNTY — On Friday, a trooper with the Indiana State Police was murdered while attempting to stop a chase on Interstate 69 north of Fort Wayne.
Around 4:30 p.m., while on duty at the scenes of weather-related accidents on I-69 in DeKalb County, additional officers got involved in a police chase on the highway.
Master Trooper James R. Bailey sought to use stop sticks to assist put an end to the pursuit when it got close to his area. Bailey was hit at that moment, according to the police, by the suspect car.
The 50-year-old trooper was given first aid at the site before being transferred to a hospital in Fort Wayne, where he later passed away from his wounds. Bailey, a resident of Auburn and a 15 1/2-year ISP veteran, is survived by his wife, their two children, and son and daughter.
Terry Dewaine Sands II, 42, of Marion, was apprehended and is currently being held in the DeKalb County Prison on a preliminary charge of obstructing law enforcement and resulting in the death of a law enforcement officer.
