Mike Dreams, the 34-year-old south Minneapolis rapper born Michael Hannah, has died, according to testimonials from friends on social media. In his writing, Dreams often reflected on his own experiences with depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder, and promoted mental health resources.

Cause of Death
| Minneapolis–based hip–hop artist and writer Mike Dreams has died. At this point, it is unknown precisely what led to his death apart from the confirmation of his death and the exact cause of his death of Mike was not released as well but the rapper later underwent gastric bypass surgery. Hannah posted on Facebook in January that he had been struggling with health issues, saying he was bed-ridden for much of November and checked himself into the hospital has been unable to walk. About Mike Dreams
He was born Michael Alexander Hannah, grew up in south Minneapolis, and began performing at community events and talent shows when he was 8 years old, according to his First Avenue performer bio.
His older brother’s murder in 2006 inspired Dreams to begin writing and performing his music during his senior year of high school. “Many of Mike’s songs come from life experiences, philosophy, self-actualization, nostalgia, and coming of age,” his performer bio states.
In addition to releasing multiple studio albums, Dreams performed several times at the Midwest Regional Peace Jam International celebration ceremony, which honors Nobel Peace Prize winners.

His interest in becoming a professional recording and performing artist came during his senior year of High School, when his older brother, J.B. was tragically gunned down in 2006. After graduation, Mike began to write and perform his original material.
Since 2007, Mike Dreams has been releasing and performing original music. His music and material have gained local, national, and international exposure through some of the world’s largest urban media outlets (DJBOOTH.NET, 2DopeBoyz.com, NahRight, VladTV, etc).
The music is self-described as “aspiration-based, inspirational, generational, realistic, and sincere.” Many of Mike’s songs come from life experiences, philosophy, self-actualization, nostalgia, and coming of age. He’s released four official projects; Dreamer’s Poetry and Just Waking Up in 2010, a promotional mixtape, Youngin’ from ’88 in the summer of 2012, and his third independent studio album, Millennial.
Collaborations and correlation
In early 2014, he released a compilation titled Mike Dreams: The Collaborations, Vol. 1, a collection of all of his featured verses with other artists. His performance accolades include playing at the Soundset Festival in 2010, powered by the independent record label Rhymesayers, along with the likes of local and national acts such as Doomtree, Toki Wright, Wiz Khalifa, Macklemore, Method Man, and Redman. He’s opened up for nationally known artists including One. Be. Lo, Eyedea and Abilities, Zion I and Yelawolf. In 2014, Mike Dreams’ music was featured on the STARZ Network Hit Television series, POWER, executive produced by 50 Cent.
In correlation with social awareness and community activism, Mike has served as the main performing act at the Midwest Regional PeaceJam International celebration ceremony for 2003 Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Shirin Ebadi of Iran in March 2007, and again in 2012, as well as the 2008 PeaceJam Celebration for Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and 2010, for the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Rigoberta Mechu Tum of Guatemala. He has performed across Minnesota and the Midwest at elementary, junior, and senior high schools, a traveling concert tour promoting peace through hip-hop and performing arts.

The Current radio DJ Chaz Kangas shared a tribute to Dreams on Twitter on Wednesday.
“The whole career he was so open with his mental struggles in a truly vulnerable way that made so many listeners with similar struggles finally feel heard and helped destigmatize those subjects on an intimately local level,” Kangas wrote. “He meant and still means so much to so many.”
Twin Cities rapper Dwynell Roland paid tribute on his social media pages.
“This hits hard because we all seen his struggles but we also knew how mike was an uplifting person and person who shined through all of that,” he wrote. “He was a good person doing great things and no matter what always wanted to see people win no matter what he was going through.”
