Mellisa Arleth announced her father’s passing news on her official FaceBook page, the statement reads,
After a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s, my father passed away yesterday morning. If he had been able to understand what was going on, he would have been delighted to see me get a standing ovation on America’s Got Talent, or my feature in the Ripleys Believe it or Not book.
The one time he saw my show he thought it was great and he always showed affection to all his cat and rat “grandkids”. Pictured here is one of his proudest moments- the day he realized his hard work and sacrifices had paid off, for he now had an adult daughter capable of mixing a proper martini. (We were out of olives that day, don’t judge)
Melissa Arleth’s father cause of death
He passed away after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s. One of the statements reads,
Please pray for my dear sister-in-law Cathy Arleth. She cared for our beloved brother-in-law Mike for years and years suffering from Alzheimer’s and he went to be with the Lord this morning.
Her beautiful attitude has always been SO much thankfulness… Just feeling so much grief for all these years of suffering for Mike and Cathy and for our beautiful niece Melissa, and all the family who loved Mike so very much.
He was so smart, so industrious, so interested in everything, and always learning. He had a beautiful creative bent and loved plants, birds, fish, and nature. He was a joyful artistic soul who loved Jesus so much and was such a gift to us all.
Statement on the Funeral service of her father
Hello friends and family. Services for my father will be held tomorrow in massapequa and I am planning to say some words about his life. The last funeral I went to had a very generic “fill in the blanks” service that said nothing about the life of the person involved, and I want to do better. I’m asking anyone who knew him to share a short memory (you can write it below or dm me), and I’ll read some of them out. He was a really funny guy, so I’m sure you have done some great ones!
Melissa Arleth: Who is she?
Melissa Arleth has been acting on stage since her community theatre debut at the age of 11. She received a writing scholarship to attend Long Island University, where she majored in theater and minored in dance. However, it was a psychology course that permanently altered her career path.
Over a crowded Skinner box, she and the lab rats exchanged glances. At first glance, there was love. Being too strange for typical survival work, Melissa struggled to make ends meet while balancing tours and regional theatrical gigs with a job at a theme restaurant in Times Square.
She frequently came up with justifications for her character in a touring show to juggle or play the guitar onstage so that her equipment would fit in the tour van. She knew she had found her people when she had the opportunity to perform alongside genuine variety performers and sideshow nerds at Sideshows by the Seashore in Coney Island. She became skilled at stilt dancing and quickly obtained employment at the Busch Gardens amusement park in Williamsburg.
She went to the San Francisco Circus Center in 2009, where she registered for the Clown Conservatory and, through some light torture at the hands of Chinese acrobats, discovered slack rope walking. In her first burlesque show, she performed both with and without the rats.
“Cirque du Sewer”
Ahead of the year’s end, Melissa began to schedule “Cirque du Sewer” performances on stages at Renaissance fairs, amusement parks, outdoor festivals, and as the most peculiar pre-show at the Marin Shakespeare Festival. She dropped out of the program early, adding “clown school dropout” to her resume.
Pad Kee Meow, the show’s first feline cast member, joined in 2014 and swiftly won over the audience’s heart, surpassing both Melissa and the rats put together. What can you do, felines? Vitaliy, Melissa’s “Rat’s assistant,” was employed in 2016.
He is a rescue, much like all the other furry entertainers, from the P.F. Chang’s in Hackensack, New Jersey. He plays a mean guitar in addition to being a master at litter box cleanup.
The act has expanded in scope and appeal since then. The “Flaming Hoop of Doom” act by Melissa and Ebola was featured on Anderson Cooper’s short-lived talk show Anderson Live, and the David Letterman show hired Melissa and Ecoli to do the Girl and Rat Handstand.
Every rat needs to see New York at least once, so even if Letterman abruptly bumped them, it was wonderful to enjoy the delicacies in the green room.
They appeared twice on the 2017 revival of the Gong Show on ABC, where Influenza the rat dominated the obstacle course and Pad Kee Meow the cat experienced excruciating stage fright.
Schrödinger and Sputik, two new kittens, were adopted and trained in 2017. They are jumping through fire hoops as of February 2018 and have their parts in the act! Hanta the rat won a standing ovation from all four judges in 2019 when Cirque du Sewer performed on the show multiple times! 2020 was challenging for all of us, but the ensemble managed to get bookings thanks to several television appearances.
Nickeoldeon’s Unleashed, in which Pad Kee Meow finally gave a strong performance on camera, was a highlight. In 2021, Melissa and the rats traveled to France to appear on TF1’s “Game of Talents,” which saw us back on the road and in the air. Then, on Fox’s “World Pet Games,” Pad Kee Meow and Sputnik competed with Melissa and Vitaliy.
