A temporary evacuation point has been established at the Clackamas County Red Soils campus at 2051 Kaen Road in Oregon City.
On Friday night, evacuations were sparked by a hazardous brush fire. The Cedar Creek Fire has burnt 51 square miles in Central Oregon, about 15 miles east of Oakridge. Due to the extremely high fire risk this weekend in Oregon, several utility companies started implementing public safety power shutoffs on Friday morning. Shutoffs are planned for residents of high-risk areas through at least Saturday.
The National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings for the majority of the state due to the state’s high temperatures, low humidity, and strong east winds. According to the NWS website, these alerts show that “critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now…or will shortly.” Any fires that do start will spread quickly due to strong winds, and the lack of humidity makes it more challenging for firefighters to put out the flames. Electricity is being cut off by utilities like PGE and Pacific Power in regions where there is a higher chance of fires starting from downed power lines.
While some may find this inconvenient, it is an essential safety precaution to safeguard both persons and property. It is suggested that those who have been affected by the shutoffs prepare an emergency kit in case of prolonged outages.
