Lytham assault:

A person has been detained after the death of Matthew Guthrie, who was beaten and suffered significant head injuries in Lytham.

At 1.28 am on Sunday, June 18, Lancashire Police were called to Henry Street in response to a report of an assault on a 25-year-old.

A 25-year-old guy, named, Matthew was struck by a person traveling from the opposite way as he crossed Lytham Square towards Henry Street. He was rushed to the hospital and sadly passed away in hospital on June 19.

Det Chief Insp Jane Webb of Lancashire Police, said: “Our thoughts are very much with Matthew’s family at this sad and distressing time for them.

“This is a tragic case, and the investigation is ongoing. We continue to appeal for witnesses to the incident and ask for anyone with information to come forward.”

What happened to Mathew Guthrie?

Mathew died after suffering serious head injuries. He was described as a “fun, happy, caring man” by his friends and relatives.

Martin Marlow confirmed his death by sharing a tribute to him,

Lester Jefferson also posted a tribute to him, saying,

Devastated with the very sad news of Matty Guthrie’s passing. He will always be our champion goalkeeper.

Who is the suspect?

The suspect was one of three men who continued strolling towards the square before disappearing out of sight.

A 20-year-old male was detained by detectives after being arrested on suspicion of section 18 grievous bodily harm.

A suspect was taken into custody again on suspicion of manslaughter. He is currently out on bail as investigations continues.

Blackpool CID DI Kirsty Wyatt stated: “This was an assault which has left a man in hospital with serious injuries. Our thoughts are very much with him as he receives treatment.

“Enquiries are ongoing, and we are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Did you witness the man being assaulted or were you in the area of Henry Street around the time and saw three men walking away? If you have any information, please get in touch.”
