Sunny Hawkins cause of death:
The famous singer and songwriter Maiia “Sunny” Hawkins has passed away following a protracted fight with breast cancer.
She bravely fought 4 years with stage 4 cancer and passed away on September 4, 2023.
Sunny, who was part of one of Gospel’s most prominent families and had a distinguished career even before she married Jamie Hawkins, bravely fought Stage IV cancer for more than three years.
About Sunny Hawkins:
Sunny was born in Oakland, California. Beginning at age 2 at Love Centre Ministries in Oakland, California, with her godparents, gospel superstars Walter and Tramaine Hawkins, she, began singing practically as soon as she could walk.
Sunny began singing at Love Centre Ministries in the Bay Area as a toddler. Her small steps seemed deliberate because she was Tremaine and Walter Hawkins’ goddaughter.
Hawkins was raised in an unrivaled talent incubator. Sunny wed Jamie Hawkins, the son of Walter and Tremaine, a well-known producer, writer and musical director who has worked on songs by Jodeci, Donnell Jones, MC Hammer, Boyz II Men, and Lauren Hill.
Through her teenage years, she kept on performing, eventually singing all across the country in different places.
Musical Journey:
Sunny’s incredible skill has brought her to stages around the nation, including a year on Broadway where she played the lead role in the renowned musical Rent. Even Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle have penned successes for this singer-songwriter (“The Only Thing” from 2003 and “Good Lovin” from 2004).
Hawkins was one of the most versatile vocalists you will ever hear working as a solo recording artist. Hawkins infuses soul, jazz, rock, and pop with lyrics so stirring they might inspire a Sunday morning chorus.
She also adds uniqueness, perfect vocals, and freshness to each song she records. Her voice ferociously heals the heart as much as the soul. Her vocal performance will launch you into the stratosphere in one song before lulling you back down in another.
Sunny won a main role in the Broadway production of Rent alongside Joey Fatone of *NSYNC and backing vocal roles with Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan, Deborah Cox, Ray Charles, Patti LaBelle, and others as a young adult.
Sunny also honed her songwriting skills, authoring “Good Lovin” from Patti LaBelle’s 2004 album, Timeless Journey, and Aretha Franklin’s 2003 smash, “The Only Thing Missin.”
Sunny’s music is the epitome of inspiration for individuals who have lost hope, are struggling, or simply need a boost in their day. She is an unwavering evangelist for devotional love and a gifted woman of faith.
In 2004, Jamie and Sunny started working on a collaborative album. They wanted to create a modern gospel record that combined classic Gospel sounds with elements of rock, hip-hop, and soul.
Sunny presented the results of their collaboration in the shape of her debut album, More of You, in early 2005, which was one of the first album reviews we published on SoulTracks. It showcases a phenomenal husband-and-wife teamwork as well as a really skilled singer.
The couple reared their six children while remaining in Northern California. The whole music industry, which mourns this lovely wife, mother, and musician, shares their sorrow at this time.

- Daddy’s Got You Now

This breaks my heart. Many didn’t know but Sunny was Tremaine Hawkins daughter in law and she had a gospel album I used to wear out in high school. May her soul rest in peace. Y’all should give her album a listen.
