Steve Harwell passed away after battling medical complications for years. In a statement, Hayes said that Harwell passed away “surrounded by family and friends” at his Boise, Idaho, home. He continued by saying that the artist “passed peacefully and comfortably.”
Smash Mouth’s new frontman Zach Goode has been touring with the band for the past two years since Steve left the group, according to Hayes.
“Having said that, Steve’s legacy will continue to be heard through music”. His voice is one of the most recognized of a generation.

Smash Mouth vocalist Steve Harwell has died due to liver failure. According to Hayes, Steve battled multiple disorders throughout the years, which resulted in health issues like cardiomyopathy, which is caused by a weakening of the heart muscle, which impairs speech and memory.
Hayes said, “Steve has been retired from Smash Mouth for two years now, and the band continues to tour with new vocalist Zach Goode,” .
“That said, Steve’s legacy will live on through the music. With Steve, Smash Mouth has sold over 10 Million albums worldwide-wide and topped the charts with two #1 hit singles, five Top 40 singles, three Hot 100 singles, four Billboard 200 albums and a Grammy nomination not to mention the hundreds of film and television placements and of course those musical features in Shrek.”
He continued, “Steve’s iconic voice is one of the most recognizable voices from his generation. He loved the fans and loved to perform. Steve Harwell was a true American Original. A larger than life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle.
Steve should be remembered for his unwavering focus and impassioned determination to reach the heights of pop stardom. And the fact that he achieved this near-impossible goal with very limited musical experience makes his accomplishments all the more remarkable.
His only tools were his irrepressible charm and charisma, his fearlessly reckless ambition, and his king-size cajones. Steve lived a 100 percent full-throttle life. Burning brightly across the universe before burning out.”
Steve Harwell cause of death:
Steve passed away at the age of 56 after having liver failure. Hayes didn’t specify the cause of death, although Harwell had been receiving hospice care as a result of medical issues.
His sudden demise made everyone who knew him in a complete grief. The famous song ‘All Star’ could be heard in Shrek, Rat Race, Inspector Gadget, Mystery Men, etc.
Who was Steve Harwell?
Harwell was the frontman and primary vocalist for the rock band Smash Mouth. Up to Harwell’s retirement, he and bassist Paul De Lisle were the only two constants in the group.
Smash Mouth, best known for its number-one hits “All Star” and “I’m a Believer,” was founded by Harwell, who served as the band’s longtime lead singer.
During Harwell’s career, the group received a Grammy nomination for “All Star,” a song that went on to become a cult favourite after being featured on the soundtrack of the 2001 animated picture “Shrek.”
To increase the band’s early notoriety, Harwell personally took their song “Astro Lounge” to radio stations around the nation to get it played on the air.
“We never do anything traditional,” Harwell said in 1999. “We never go through the front door. It’s always the back door, or an open window or something, to get our stuff played.”
Career:
Together with Harwell, Kevin Coleman, and Paul De Lisle, Greg Camp founded Smash Mouth. Harwell previously worked as a rapper with the group F.O.S.In the sixth season of the VH1 reality series The Surreal Life in 2006, Harwell was a prominent cast member.
Along with making a cameo in the 2001 movie Rat Race, he has also made appearances on numerous radio and television programmes.
His song “All Star” is his most well-known work. For the 2013 South Korean-Chinese animated film Pororo, The Racing Adventure, Harwell also sang two songs, “Beside Myself” and “Everything Just Crazy”.
On August 27, 2016, Harwell passed out on stage while performing with Smash Mouth in Urbana, Illinois. He was then taken by ambulance to the hospital. Without him, the band finished the concert, with De Lisle taking over on vocals.
The band played in Bethel, New York’s Bethel Woods Centre for the Arts during a beer and wine festival in October 2021, where Harwell looked to be intoxicated and threatening viewers.Harwell announced his retirement after the performance due to chronic health problems.
