The gun was not supposed to be loaded. The affidavit stated that Baldwin was handed the gun by assistant director Dave Halls, who believed the gun did not contain live rounds; as such, Halls yelled, “cold gun” to signify its assumed harmlessness. Baldwin was practicing drawing the gun from its holster when it went off. In a press release, the Sheriff’s Office said that Baldwin was questioned by investigators and released. No charges have been filed and the incident remains under investigation.

Hutchins, 42, was working as Rust’s director of photography. She was born in Ukraine and claimed to have been raised as an “army brat” on a military post in the Arctic in an interview with American Cinematographer in 2019. She began her career as a journalist, but after working on British film productions in Eastern Europe, she changed her focus to filmmaking. She then relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a career in cinematography.
Hutchins met Bob Primes, a cinematographer, and two-time Emmy winner, while she was in Los Angeles. Primes reviewed her resume and advised Hutchins to apply to the American Film Institute Conservatory (AFI). 2013 saw her admitted and begin the program; one of her instructors was Primes. She was among the most creative students Primes has ever had, he said. ‘You just don’t do everything perfectly to be a successful director of photography,’ said the director. He also revealed that he couldn’t explain how a bullet ended up in the gun, which was intended to be a prop for the Western movie. Baldwin said: “Someone put a live bullet in a gun. A bullet that wasn’t even supposed to be on the property.”
