According to his family, Edward T. Begay, who served as vice-chairman of the Navajo Nation in the 1980s, died on Sunday. He was 87 years old when he died.
Begay’s family did not specify a cause of death, but they did say he died in Albuquerque surrounded by family members.

Begay, who grew up in New Mexico, served on the tribe council from 1971 to 1983, representing the Churchrock and Breadsprings Chapters.
Begay worked closely with the council as vice chairman from 1983 to 1987 to renegotiate mineral, coal, oil, and gas leases with major energy companies.
Begay was elected speaker of the 88-member council in 1999 and served two terms, during which time he helped to establish the first gambling compact between New Mexico and Arizona.
He also presided over the Navajo Nation Council when the tribe introduced traditional, natural, and customary laws into its governance system.
