Who was Alland Byallo?

Alland Byallo was an Art Director and music-maker from Berlin, Germany. He was born and raised in LA and moved to San Francisco in 2003, where he and his buddies hosted a large, opulent, well-known techno party at the storied club The Endup.

He worked as the Art Director at Beatport and owned his own independent record label, Full Bleed Sound. He spent the majority of his time in his charming small home studio.

After spending seven crazy years on the Bay, he relocated to Berlin, where fun things occurred. He released an album on Third Ear Recordings, as well as some singles and EPs on the great labels Room With A View, Dirt Crew, Poker Flat, Rawax, and Housewax. He held a few gigs at nightclubs and radio stations.

A few of his closest friends and he formed the band KAMM, and the group put out two albums. The debut LP was released on Marcel Vogel’s excellent Intimate Friends label, while the follow-up was released by France’s illustrious Circus Company.

Both a visual and a musical artist, Alland paints his audio canvases with a lack of concern for convention.

Two distinct works make up his most recent EP, Fill Light Shine, which was released in March on his own label. The rambling “Karma Beach” has a musical strangeness that is difficult to describe, but it nonetheless manages to reassure because of its eccentric appeal and emotional depth, which move this strange caravan along at just the right speed.

With its fractured, almost UK-Garage-esque rhythms and bass, “Reflect, Rotate” gives the proceedings a darker and more driving vibe that can raise the roof. It turns out that Fill Light Shine captures a crucial period in the author’s creative and personal development—a moment when the pressure of stress, comparison, and exhaustion gave way to curiosity, wonder, and—most importantly—contentment.

It has a lot of important lessons for life and music-making, not the least of which is that we all need to occasionally take a break and rediscover the simple joy of making music for its own reason.

On August 10, 2023, producer and DJ Alland Byallo passed away.

The tragic death of a close friend and colleague, Alland Byallo, has shocked and upset Santé DJ & Producer, who has written about it.

Alland Byallo’s career as a graphic designer and creative director spans more than 20 years, and it is a testament to his skills and unrelenting dedication. Through prestigious courses at the acclaimed Pasadena Art Center College of Design’s “Saturday High” and “Art Center At Night” programs, Byallo refined his skills.

Alland became engrossed in the alluring, untamed fusion of electronic music and graphic design in the late 1990s, which would later influence his life. From 2005 until 2012, he had a big impact on the American techno scene as a whole thanks to his important position as co-founder, art director, and regular DJ of the iconic [KONTROL] party in San Francisco. The popular event series’ visual identity spread around the world.

I am running out of tears. #speechless 🥺🥺🥺💔💔💔😑😑😑”

Stuart Li wrote: “Sad and unbelievable news as we’ve lost another friend. Just hearing the word that good guy Alland Byallo has suddenly passed away. Besides music obviously and graphic design, we shared an obsession w food too. Can’t forget chowing down on Chinese fatty pork and chicken feet in west Berlin together or ordering too much dim sum when he came to visit Toronto. The pic is of the release on his label that he asked me to do a remix for. You’ll be sorely missed. Rest in peace.”
