Maryland State Police statement on the accident
Two teenagers were killed Thursday night on Interstate 81 in Hagerstown after the sedan they were riding in collided with the cab of a tractor-trailer.
A third occupant of the automobile was flown by air to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, according to a state police press release.
State police claimed that the deceased were Clayton Knode, 15, of Clear Spring, and Tyler Josenhans, 17, of Hagerstown, the sedan’s right-rear passenger.
Police said Kannon Shives, 16, of Clear Spring, who was riding in the front seat of the vehicle, was rushed to Shock Trauma.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, whose name was not immediately known, was not hurt in the collision, according to state police.
Although it is still early in the investigation, police say they suspect the black Lexus sedan merged onto northbound I-81 from Exit 6A of the U.S. 40 eastbound exit “at a high rate of speed and smashed into the passenger cabin” of the tractor-trailer.
Thus according to authorities, the incident happened as the tractor-trailer was traveling north on I-81 and was getting ready to exit at Exit 6A for U.S. 40 east.
What happened according to the police investigation?
As stated by a Washington County 911 supervisor, the accident was on the west border of Hagerstown and was reported at 8:47 p.m. on Thursday.
As per the report, state police are still looking into the crash’s causes and contributing circumstances.
Under the notice, the state police crash team was dispatched to investigate due to the severity of the collision and the injuries.
To assist with the reaction and investigation, northbound I-81 and the ramp from eastbound U.S. 40 to northbound I-81 were shut down for about five hours.
By 1:36 in the morning, they were fully reopened, according to a Washington County 911 supervisor.
Deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and state police from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division also responded, according to the press release, in addition to the troopers from the Hagerstown barrack.
As stated by the 911 operator, firefighters from Maugansville and Halfway as well as Williamsport, Hagerstown, and Halfway responded.
Community Rescue Service is the ambulance’s home base in Maugansville.
