About Sinulog
One of the biggest and most vibrant events in the Philippines, Sinulog has a long and illustrious history. The biggest celebration honoring the Santo Nio, or the child Jesus, who used to be the patron saint of the entire province of Cebu is held every year on the third Sunday in January in Cebu City.
It consists primarily of a dance routine that honors the Filipino people’s acceptance of Christianity and their pagan background.
Aside from the vibrant and joyful dancing, Sinulog also hosts an SME trade show where it exhibits high-quality exports from Cebu, drawing visitors from all over the world to the island’s treasures.
Sinulog now refers to competition with teams from throughout the nation as opposed to the traditional street dancing of the locals because the cultural event has recently been commercialized as a tourist attraction.
Ballesteros explains that the Sinulog Foundation is a non-government organization and the secret to its success is simply “the Cebuano.”
“When there’s a funding problem, the Cebuanos give. During the festival, every sector is involved: the military, the police, the medical community, the fire department, communications group, traffic enforcers, the city government, the whole community,” he shares.
