Who was Bishop John Manz?
Bishop Manz, who was ordained to the priesthood in 1971 and the episcopacy in 1996, devoted his life to serving God and the people. Numerous people within and outside of our Archdiocese had their lives affected by his steadfast dedication and relentless efforts.
On May 12, 2021, Bishop Manz, who lived at Good Shepherd Parish in Little Village, celebrated his fifty years as a priest and his twenty-four years as a bishop. He served as the auxiliary bishop of Vicariate IV, which covers parts of Chicago’s west and northwest sides as well as the city’s near-west suburbs.
As required by canon law, he has sent Pope Francis a letter of resignation at the age of 75, although he said he will carry on serving until it is accepted.
Manz remembered,
“My first parish [Providence of God] was in the Pilsen neighborhood, on 18th Street. It’s not there anymore. I was there for seven years,”
“Back then, it was a poor area. I became very fond of that parish. I got there when I was 25 years old. It was 1971, a time when people began to talk about the rights of Hispanics, of Chicanos. I remember having participated in marches and protests for their rights.”
Parishioners and leaders alike are fond of him for his efforts as an immigrant rights advocate. Others have been motivated by Bishop Manz’s vocation to consider their call to the priesthood.
Bishop Manz, also known as “Father Juan” by his parishioners, served as a priest at the Providence of God, St. Roman, and St. Agnes of Bohemia parishes. He was then consecrated as an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1996.
As chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Subcommittee on Pastoral Care of Migrants, Refugees, and Travellers and as a member of the Diversity in the Church Committee and the Subcommittee on the Church in Latin America, he has fought for justice and dignity for his vulnerable brothers and sisters.
His duties required him to visit 15 states with a sizable Hispanic population, minister to, converse with, and listen to migrant workers. He also travelled to Latin American nations, notably Panama, where he stayed half a year, and paid workers visits in Kentucky and Alabama. He claimed that as the archdiocese works to establish more essential parishes, the Renew My Church initiative and the ensuing decrease in the number of parishes have been difficult but necessary.

“The BCI shares the sad news of the passing of Bishop John Manz, retired auxiliary bishop of Archdiocese of Chicago. Bishop Manz was ordained a bishop in 1996 and, though worked primarily with the Latino population, visited many of our black catholic parishes during his service as a bishop and confirmed many of our young people.
May God bring him into His heavenly rest and may He comfort those who mourn the passing of a kind man and gentle shepherd.”
