Who was Ted Snell?
In 1949, Ted Snel, AM, CitWA, was born in Geraldton, Western Australia. He traveled to England to begin postgraduate study in Birmingham after earning an Associateship in Art Teaching.
Upon his return to Australia, he started working as a part-time instructor at WAIT (now Curtin University), where he held the positions of Dean of Art and Professor of Contemporary Art. He was named director of the University of Western Australia’s Cultural Precinct in 2009. He has provided cultural commentary for ABC radio and television, The Australian, and has written for regional and international journals. He has written several books and organized a lot of shows, many of which provide documentation of Western Australia’s visual culture.
As Chair of the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council, Artbank, the Asialink Visual Arts Advisory Committee, University Art Museums Australia, and a board member of the National Association for the Visual Arts, he has made contributions to the national arts agenda throughout the past four decades.
He formerly served on the boards of the UQ Art Museum, ANAT (Australian Network for Art & Technology), and Balcatta Independent Public School. He also served as chair of the Fremantle Biennale.
