What is Glioma?Glioma is a type of tumor that originates in the brain or spinal cord, composed of cells resembling healthy glial cells. These tumors can grow and exert pressure on brain or spinal cord tissue, leading to various symptoms depending on the affected area. Gliomas encompass various types, some slow-growing and non-cancerous, while others are malignant, spreading rapidly and invading healthy brain tissue. The specific glioma type helps determine the severity and guides treatment, which typically includes surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and other interventions. |
“Battling Brain Tumor: A Mother and Son’s Journey for Hope and Survival”
In December 2021, Jean, a single mother of two boys, faced a devastating turn of events when her youngest son, 18-year-old Stephen, began experiencing neck pain.
In a short span of time, Stephen’s life took a drastic and heartbreaking turn as doctors diagnosed him with a stage 4 tumor located on the stem of his brain.
Stephen had to undergo three surgeries to remove most of the tumor, and a permanent shunt was inserted to manage the fluid buildup. Unfortunately, these procedures also had a significant impact on Stephen’s eyesight and balance.
To make matters even more challenging, Jean and Stephen received the devastating news that his condition was deemed incurable in Ireland.
Undeterred, they embarked on a journey of extensive research and consultations, eventually connecting with a hospital in the United States where a young boy from Donegal was experiencing promising results.
Stephen’s Fight for Survival: A Mother’s Plea for Help
However, the opportunity for treatment in the U.S. comes at an overwhelming cost of €300,000. As a result, Jean and Stephen are reaching out to the public for support and assistance in their quest to access this potentially life-saving program.
It’s difficult to express such a plea in writing, let alone in person, but this opportunity represents Stephen’s best chance for survival. Jean, like any loving mother, is willing to share her story and seek the support of the people of Ireland.
Jean and Stephen currently live together, and Jean, who has worked tirelessly throughout her life to provide for her boys, now finds herself unable to work as she dedicates her time to caring for her youngest son.
This unexpected twist of fate has turned their world upside down. Stephen’s journey toward recovery will be arduous, but he possesses remarkable determination and a strong will to conquer his illness, with the ultimate goal of reuniting with his family and friends as soon as possible.
