What happened to Samuel Mwarey?
Police said today a 16-year-old boy named Samuel Mwarey of Hilo, was critically injured when struck by a police blue-and-white sedan.
He was taken to hospital in critical condition after the crash on Friday night. Unfortunately, the teen pedestrian, Samuel, was declared dead early on Monday morning, at 12:16 a.m. at Hilo Medical Center, according to the authorities.
The Officer who hit him was not injured in the accident.
Pedestrian Crash explained:
Police said Mwarey was walking on Kapiolani Street between Moholi Street and West Lanikaula Street at about 10:30 p.m. on Friday. But, unfortunately, he was hit by an on-duty officer driving a marked vehicle.
Officials added that the vehicle was not operating in emergency mode and not had its blue light on. Hawaii County Police say the officer involved is an 18-year old veteran of the department.
According to the authorities, the young man Mwarey was wearing dark clothes and was not in the marked crosswalk. Also, there was little light and rain in the area at the time of the collision.
Samuel Mwarey cause of death:
A thorough investigation has been initiated to pinpoint the precise cause of death of Samuel, police said. East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit has started investigating this incident.
Authorities say Mwarey was taken to Hilo Medical Center Emergency Department for treatment of head injuries and was listed in critical condition pending death. An autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
After his death, this investigation was changed from negligent homicide to homicide and is being investigated by the East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit.
The uninjured officer will be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, which is standard procedure. The Professional Standards Board is continuing its internal investigation into the collision.
It was the second traffic death on Hawaii Island in 2024, compared to one the previous year.
