Samboy Lim’s career:

Avelino Borromeo Lim Jr. also known as Samboy “The Skywalker” Lim, was a retired Filipino professional basketball player of the Philippine Basketball Association.

Following his three consecutive NCAA championships with the Letran Knights, Lim joined San Miguel in 1986 and played his whole 11-year PBA career with the legendary Beermen team.

Lim was a key player in San Miguel’s nine PBA championships, including their uncommon 1989 Grand Slam. Lim, who was listed as one of the PBA’s 25 Greatest Players and 40 Greatest Players, had his No. 9 jersey retired by the Beermen.

Being a part of the Philippine squads that won silver and bronze in the Asian Games in 1990 and 1986, respectively, as well as two Southeast Asian Games titles, meant that Lim also had an impact on victory as a member of the national team.

Additionally, he was a part of the winning teams in the Asian Basketball Club Championships of 1984 and 1985.

The Skywalker’s high leaping ability allowed him to dish out acrobatic shots and hang-time moves interspersed with slam dunks, making him one of the most beloved basketball players of the 1980s and 90s.

Lim played for the San Miguel Beermen for the majority of his playing career, winning nine PBA championships there.

He was a five-time PBA All Star, a PBA Grand Slam winner, and one of the top 25 players in the league.

His exciting, high-flying style of play, however, came at a cost as he was injured in multiple falls. Due to his inability to play through the entire season, he was unable to win the Most Valuable Player Award.
