Mikeal Maglieri passed away:
It is with deep sadness that we must announce the passing of Mikeal Maglieri, the owner of The Whisky and The Rainbow Bar & Grill. He departed this world on the afternoon of November 4, 2023.
He and his late father were such a huge part of the history of the sunset strip. The Maglieri Family has been gracing the Sunset Strip for three generations with their historic landmark enterprises.
Alison Martino posted about this sad news on social media and the statement reads,
I am completely gutted and in shock about the sudden passing of Mikeal Maglieri. Words fail me at the moment, as I am sitting here immensely inconsolable. But I’ll try my best… Mikael and his family mean the absolute world to me – and have for decades. In my early days I always went to the Rainbow in the evenings to see his father Mario, but during later years, I would go in during the afternoon because I knew Mikael would be sitting there on the patio, and we would always have the best talks. I’m uable to process my thoughts right now or speak eloquently but I loved Mikael with all my heart. I have never known a better human being. I’m so grateful that I ran into him so recently – it wasn’t at the Rainbow, which seemed odd not to see him and his natural habitat, but it was one of the most lovely and meaningful run-ins I’ve ever had with a friend. I’m grateful as the day is long to ever have known him. As of today the Sunset Strip will never be the same. My deepest sympathies to Mike Maglieri & Amy Maglieri.
Who was Mikeal Maglieri?
Mikeal was a great champion of music. He was also kind and generous. He was a major influence in creating the vibrant music and rock ‘n’ roll culture that characterized Los Angeles for many years as the proprietor of this legendary venue.
With its storied terrace, The Rainbow developed into a sanctuary for musicians, actresses, and rock stars. It was a location where people made music history, forged friendships, and shared memories. Mikeal Maglieri was in business since he was 16 years old. He bagan with Jimi Hendrix [played].
The Whisky & Rainbow Family
The Whisky A Go Go started in 1964 and contributed to the growth of the rock culture in Los Angeles. Legendary groups spanning multiple generations performed on the Whiskey’s corner stage, including Guns N’ Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Guns N’ Roses, The Doors, the Byrds, Janis Joplin, and Led Zeppelin.
From the summer of 1966 onwards, The Doors actually became the house band at Whiskey, opening for every band that played there for two sets a night. They opened for a number of big names, including Johnny Rivers, Buffalo Springfield, Love, Them, The Turtles, and Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band.
Morrison allegedly took acid, missed the first set, and for the first time performed “The End” with its Oedipal tirade during the second set, which led to the Doors’ final set. The following day, they were fired.
In 1972, Mario Maglieri, along with Whisky co-founder Elmer Valentine, Lou Adler, and others, founded the Rainbow Bar And Grill, which debuted with an Elton John party. Since then, it has gained notoriety for catering to famous musicians, including Harry Nilsson, Grace Slick, Ringo Starr, Neil Diamond, John Lennon, and most notably, Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead. He would frequently be found at the bar playing the video card game offered by the establishment before he passed away.
