We regret to inform you of the passing of Joyce Wilson Nixon, renowned as the lead singer of the JWN BAND and as the wife of Jeff Nixon, a former Buffalo Bills football player. Joyce Wilson Nixon was a community activist, a show stopper, a leader, an honorary Crusader and so much more.

Her husband Jeff Nixon shared the news of her passing on Facebook, writing:

My beloved wife, Joyce Wilson Nixon, passed away today. She was an extrordinary woman. I loved her with all my heart and soul. No more suffering and no more pain. She has entered the kingdom of heaven.

Who was Joyce Nixon?

Joyce Nixon was adopted by James and Edna Wilson after being born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her mother, Edna, a former nurse, passed away, and her father, who just turned 81, resigned from US Steel after working there for 38 and a half years.

In Atlanta, Georgia, her brother Klettis Sloan works as a police officer. Joan Green, Joyce’s biological mother, with whom she has had little contact, is still distant from her.

Ron Bassham, her biological father, is active in local politics and labor organizations. He is a UAW Hall of Fame member and a retired military intelligence officer.

Career life

She has been a member of the Zion Baptist Church in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, for 47 years and attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

She performs as a vocalist and has lately collaborated with Lance Diamond and Kenny Berry of Taylor Made Jazz. Joyce frequently performs at the Annual Tonawanda Canal Festival with the band Taylor Made Jazz.

She is a Mistress of Ceremonies for the May Company Trend Shows as well as a model and spokesperson for Ralph Lauren, Inc. Joyce regularly reads books when she has free time because she is never too busy to do so.

Joyce has been a committed member of Fifty Women With a Vision from the organization’s beginnings. The East Side’s Jefferson Avenue is in need of revitalization, and that is the group’s main objective.

It is constructing an “art park” and conducts a summertime neighborhood arts festival. At the moment, Joyce serves as the CEO and Executive Director of National Inner Cities Youth Opportunities, Inc.

Family Life

Her family life is really hectic. Charles (31) Damien (29), and Libran Dior (26) are the three adult children that Joyce is the wife and mother to. She is also Jena Nixon’s (19) and Jeff Nixon Jr.’s (17) stepmother.

In addition, she is the proud grandma of four of the prettiest kids you’ve ever seen. With the aid of her staff, Joyce has campaigned for financing for a number of community programs that have benefited Buffalo, Erie County, and New York State during the past fifteen years.

Programs like the Buffalo Wings Track Programme, the Erie County Weed & Seed Crime Prevention Programme, the Randy Smith Basketball League, the Jeff Nixon Basketball League, the Ted Washington Unlimited Basketball League, and others too numerous to list are just a few examples.

In addition, Joyce gives back to the community by working for a variety of nonprofit organizations, such as the Rotary Club of Buffalo International, the Women for Effective Change Board of Directors, 50 Women with a Vision, the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers, the Executive Officer for the Commission on the Status of Women, and a host of others that are too numerous to list.

For her community service, she has also been recognized with a number of honors, including the WBLK Radio Professional of the Month award, Mrs. New York People’s Choice, and the Black Achiever in Industry 2000 award.
