Fort Pierce resident Darin “Slater” aka (Slate Rock)Slater, passed away on January 11, 2024, at the age of 53. He was the owner of Slate’s Barbershop in Fort Pierce. Read on to know more about his death in detail.

Darin Slater, the owner of Slate’s Barbershop in Fort Pierce passed away suddenly. This sad news was announced by Lawrence Dampier in the following social media statement that reads,

The fabric of Ft. Pierce has been torn. A legend has transitioned. The stories, the music, the trash talk, the jokes, the esteem of a fresh cut from Slate. What he and his barbershop meant to the culture of Ft. Pierce can’t be overstated. I say Ave J. should be changed to Slate Rock Ave.

Darin Slater cause of death:

Darin, a licensed barber in Fort Pierce for almost three decades passed away suddenly leaving his close friends and family members in a deep sorrow. He may have passed away after battling illness. However, the exact cause of death was not revealed yet.

This sudden death has left the community in shock and mourning. Tributes flooded social media as the demise news of Slater broke out.

The community rallies around Slater during this trying time to honor him and provide support for his family members. His efforts in community service and interpersonal relationships have made a lasting impression on everyone he came into contact with.

Who was Darin Slater?

Darin Slater aka Slate rock was a well-known barber from Fort Pierce, Florida. For the past 30 years, Slate, as he was known in the neighborhood, has been a licensed Master Barber at Slate’s Barbershop in Fort Pierce. He turned his passion into a business.

The once small group of friends and family has grown into hundreds of loyal customers. Slate has been giving back to the community with his Annual Back to School Cut-A-Thon for the past few years.

The 4th Annual Slate Barbershop Back-To-School Cut-A-Thon was held on August 15, 2015, in Fort Pierce, Florida, with the help of friends Jerome Bremby and Gary Grismley.

The 6th Annual Slate Barbershop Back-To-School Cut-A-Thon was held on August 12, 2017 at 3803 Ave. J, Fort Pierce.

During this event, he provided free drinks, food, and school supplies. Additionally, from 8 a.m. to midnight on the hour, Slate gives away a free haircut.

AmeriGas Propane, Jerome Bembry of Pepsi, Kona Ice, Bounce World, Grafx by Caz, Gary “The Grill Master” Grimsley, Albert Wilson of the Kansas City Chiefs, Foundation, and aabbtreasurecoast.com are just a few of the community business partners that helped to conduct this event.

When asked why he started this event in 2011, Slate responded, “I have customers who are single parents that are faithful in bringing their sons in for haircuts throughout the year. Back to school is a big expense especially when you have 3 sometimes 6 boys needing haircuts at the same time. This is our way of giving back and saying Thank You!”
