In Acres Homes, a young mother was fatally shot early on Thursday morning in front of her 3-year-old son, according to Houston police.

Investigations are ongoing in the 2800 block of West Gulf Bank Road, close to West Montgomery Road. Officers responded to a shooting call about 2:45 a.m. on Thursday and discovered an SUV on the side of the road.

According to the police, a male passenger was found with several gunshot wounds, and the female driver was found dead from gunshot wounds. The man underwent surgery after being transferred to the hospital.

The woman’s 3-year-old toddler was in the backseat, according to the authorities, but was unharmed by the shooting.

Police claim that after two automobiles were seen traveling very quickly, one of the vehicles reportedly fired bullets. After the collision, a white car was spotted fleeing while traveling northbound on W. Montgomery Road and blowing a tire as it turned.

A police officer arrived to the scene after hearing the information over the radio. According to the police, the officer came upon a white car with two occupants changing a tire. Both of them were brought to HPD’s main office for questioning.

Police have not yet stated whether or not this was a case of road rage, but they have advised that pulling back and slowing down is the best course of action when things get heated on the road.

Asst. Chief J. Anderson with the Houston Police Department said,

“I can’t imagine the trauma that he’s feeling and the shock of what this event must have been. Thankfully, officers were able to get him to his grandmother and in the care of family so that he’s being taken care of. HFD came out very quickly to check on him. He’s completely fine. No apparent injuries, but I can imagine this being a very traumatic event for him.”
