Bowie Community in Mourning: What Happened to Daniel Esparza?
It is with heavy hearts that we share the deeply saddening news of the passing of Osito Daniel Esparza, a dedicated member of the Bowie High School Marching Band and Mariachi.
The student, a member of the Bowie High School band, who collapsed during a football game against Ysleta HS on Friday night died this morning.
A spokesperson for the University Medical Center (UMC) confirmed the news without providing further details. The collapse occurred at the Baty Simmang Memorial Stadium and he had to receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to save his life.
Daniel Esparza, 17, was quickly treated by the on-site medical team, who assessed the situation and ensured the necessary precautions were taken, the Ysleta Independent School District (YISD) said.
He added that emergency medical services (EMS) were called to the scene and immediately transported the student for additional medical care.
Roberto’s mother Georgina Campos established a GoFundMe page to assist with medical expenses.

The El Paso ISD community grieves with the family of Bowie High School student Daniel Esparza who tragically passed away Sunday, Sept. 10. Daniel was a beloved member of the school community.
He was a dutiful member of the Bowie band, mariachi group and JROTC who relished his role as a leader. El Paso ISD stands with Daniel’s family and with the entirety of Bowie High School as they gather the strength to deal with this trying time.
A team of counselors is available to Bowie students and staff, and the district will provide any additional support necessary. Thank you to our Bowie students and staff, our local emergency first-responder personnel, and everyone in the community who has offered support throughout the last few days.

Bowie High School band student Daniel Esparza reportedly died suddenly on Friday, September 8 after falling during the team’s football game against Ysleta.
On September 8, 2023, while performing for the band at the high school football game against Ysleta High School at Bowie Stadium, Daniel collapsed and lost consciousness to the degree that medical personnel had to begin CPR on Daniel.
EMS and Fire Dept. arrived and also attended to him and continued with CPR and defibrillating and transported Daniel to UMC. But after a brave fight, he lost his battle.
Esparza’s demise was announced on September 11 by the University Medical Centre of El Paso. “Please say a prayer for his family and all those who loved him,” said UMC.

On Monday morning, Bowie band director Roberto Campos III reflected on Esparza’s influence on the school and himself.
“Wonderful kid,” Campos III said of Esparza. “Music was a passion for him and he wanted to pursue that moving forward. We are going to miss him. Daniel had a great passion for life, he loved his family, his friends, and his school. I’ve been the band director for three years and Daniel has been a member of the band since I started. We always enjoyed being around Daniel, he was a positive influence on others, and he was a great friend. In honor of him, we will continue to perform, we will continue to be the best we can be. That’s what he would have wanted.”
