Who was Ava Fleming?
Ava Fleming, from Phoenix, Arizona, presents a very distinct and modern approach to Raqs Sharki. With over 20 years of experience in Middle Eastern dance and cross-training in Latin ballroom instruction and partner performance, she was a refined representation of today’s classic dancer.
Ava’s dedication to learning and development as a person has defined her path. She enthusiastically pursued her passion, eventually achieving success in that field.
Ava was highly recognized as a performer, choreographer, and instructor of Middle Eastern Dance. She has received praise from all over the world for her distinctive style of Middle Eastern dancing. Ava has had the good fortune to share the stage with talented musicians like Karim Nagi of Turbo Tabla, Souhail Kaspar, and Chris Spheers.
She was the only dancer to have ever won all three of the Belly Dancer of the Universe competition categories—Champions, People’s Choice, and Miss Congeniality(2004)—and was well-known among her peers, role models, and audience members.
Ava finds inspiration in her students’ new perspectives, in her resolve to stay true to herself and follow her heart, and, of course, in excellent teachers and music.

R.I.P. Ava Fleming . You were such a beautiful spicy warm human…so much fire in your spirit. I have such wonderful memories from MEDANZ festival in NZ, hanging out in hotpools and dangling your legs off the stage side having cheeky fun with Karim Nagy….and your dancing was just gifted fluid technical and always from the heart.

Your class at ASU introduced me to the beautiful art of belly dance and I met so many incredible people at that time in my life. It was such an honor to learn directly from you.
