Tragic Accident Claims Life of Anthony Haughton in Radcliffe

On the evening of Thursday, November 2, a tragic incident unfolded as 55-year-old Anthony Haughton was walking along Water Street when he was struck by a vehicle, as reported by the police.

The incident prompted a rapid response from emergency services, who swiftly arrived at the scene.

Mr. Haughton was promptly transported to Salford Royal Hospital in a bid to save his life, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries the following night.

Driver Detained by Police After Accident

At the scene of the accident, the driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-old man, acted responsibly by remaining on-site and cooperating fully with law enforcement officers. As a result, he was promptly detained by the authorities for further questioning as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.

Further developments in the tragic incident revealed that the driver who struck Anthony Haughton had failed a roadside drug test, as confirmed by the police.

Consequently, the driver was arrested on suspicion of multiple serious charges, including causing death by dangerous driving, causing death whilst uninsured, and the additional charge of having failed a roadside drug test. Following his arrest, he was taken into custody for thorough questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.

To facilitate the investigation, authorities implemented a cordon on a portion of the road last night, where the accident occurred. Within this secured area on Water Street, collision investigators were observed meticulously documenting the scene, including taking photographs of the debris, as they sought to piece together the circumstances of the tragic collision.

As part of their investigative efforts, the police have made a crucial appeal for potential witnesses to step forward. This plea for witnesses holds significant importance in revealing the sequence of events that led to the tragic accident and forms an integral part of the broader mission to offer understanding and closure to those deeply affected by this devastating incident.

Additionally, they are keen to contact individuals who may possess dashcam footage related to the incident. According to a spokesperson from the Greater Manchester Police (GMP), the following statement was released:

“Police are appealing for witnesses after a fatal collision that occurred on Water Street in Radcliffe last night (Thursday 2 November 2023).

“At around 6.35pm, a vehicle collided with a pedestrian, causing life-threatening injuries. The victim, a 55-year-old man, was taken to Salford Royal Hospital and was pronounced dead later in the evening.

“The driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-old man, remained at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, causing death whilst uninsured and having failed a roadside drug test.

He was then taken to Bury Custody to be processed. Police are appealing for any witnesses, or anyone who may have dashcam footage of the incident to come forward and help their enquiries.
